BIOGRAPHY

Raffe Burrell is a designer from London whose studio was founded to pursue his passion for creating the exceptional through design. Working mainly from Como, Italy, with a network of highly skilled artisans, the studio works primarily on high-end residential and commercial projects on the production of large-scale lighting sculptures.

With more than 15 years professional experience: honing skills in the renowned studios of Paul Cocksedge, Fredrikson Stallard & Eva Menz, Raffe has worked on an ever increasing scale of project, both in the UK and worldwide. These, more often than not, are the result of a private commission to create something unique and one of a kind.

The studio is driven by Raffe's fascination with exploring materials and production techniques, old and new, to assist with the creation of stunning sculptures where attention to detail is second to none. This niche speciality permits a certain kind of exploration and encourages his resolve in taking on a challenge.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Rock_Wall light series is an extension of previous works using carved semi-precious rock crystal quartz stone for lighting sculptures.

This new iteration takes a unique polished hand carved jewel and confines it within carefully constructed stainless steel housing. With the aid of 3D scanning technology, the stone merges with acid polished mirrored stainless steel to both constrain and reflect both itself and its surroundings.

The framework acts as a boundary forced upon the crystal, restricting growth, whilst bringing the stone to life with a serene glow of light emitted from within. The characteristics inherent to the material are celebrated and dance playfully with the viewer.
